Crying Steel, a Heavy Metal group from Bologna, were born in the spring of 1982, from the ashes of the hard Wurdalak group, with the classic five-piece lineup: vocals, two guitars, bass and drums. The founders Alberto Simonini (ch.) and Angelo Franchini (bs.) who were joined later by Luca Bonzagni (vc.). Having recruited a guitarist and a drummer, the three began to play in their city, soon followed by a loyal group of fans. Despite the lineup changes, the group continued to play live successfully even in times when this was made difficult by various musical trends and fashions. From the beginning of 1983 the lineup became definitive: Angelo Franchini (Bass), Alberto Simonini and Franco Nipoti (Guitars), Luca Bonzagni (Vocals) and Luca Ferri (Drums). A few months later one of their demo-tapes interested the specialized monthly Rockerilla which reviewed it very favorably and reported the group to the Metal Eye label which decided to include Crying Steel in the first Italian Heavy Metal compilation “Metal Eruption” with the song “Thundergods” . In January 1985 the 33rpm Crying Steel was released, again by Metal Eye, which shows a group that was now quite mature. The live activity grows by playing around Italy and maturing further. In January 1987 they were voted by the readers of the specialized magazine HM as the second best Italian Heavy Metal Band. In July of the same year the group signed a recording contract with LM Records/Materiali Sonori and in December of the same year the group’s second LP was released: “On The Prowl” also released on Compact Disc, Picture Disc and Cassette.
